"Snap, Crackle & Flop: Creating Better Copy"

This course is aimed at those involved in the creation of publicity or promotional materials, particularly those new to the Library and Information profession or those with an interest in visual/graphic design who want to learn the basics.

The outline for the workshop is given as a guide only. The presenter has recently run the session again and found that depending on audience participation the workshop length can vary.
12.30pm Arrival and registration (tea & coffee will be available)
1pm Snap, Crackle and Flop workshop - the workshop will include a presentation, interspersed with group discussion work.
2.15pm Short break (tea & coffee will be available)

Objectives: At the end of the workshop participants will have:
1. Considered the importance of the design brief in order to stay ‘on message’ and ‘on target’
2. Recognised the impact of the interplay between form and space
3. Developed an understanding of different grid systems in guiding layout
4. Examined why choice and position of typography impacts the visual message and tone
5. Reflected on the choice of colour and the impact this may have on its reader
6. Gained knowledge of some of the fundamental principles behind graphic design

Workshop prerequisites: Participants are asked to bring with them one piece of promotional literature that they have found particularly effective. This could be something they have produced, their institution has created, or something they’ve simply seen. It could be a poster, flyer, press release, badge, website etc. It doesn’t have to be a Library publication!
